Check 511 Alberta for the full route, not just your starting point — Fox Creek and Valleyview conditions often differ from Edmonton's. Fuel up at Whitecourt or Fox Creek regardless of your gauge; winter idling burns more than you think. Pack a real emergency kit: blankets, candle, snacks, booster cables and a charged phone bank.
On the road
Divided sections invite speed, but black ice loves the shaded curves and bridge decks around the Little Smoky valley. Leave triple the summer following distance behind semis, and if visibility drops, pull into Valleyview rather than pushing the last hour.
