For quiet-burn winter fitness, the Wapiti Nordic Centre south of the city grooms some of northern Alberta's best cross-country trails through the river valley forest.
The trails
Expect a network of groomed classic and skate-skiing loops from gentle green to legitimately hilly, including lit trails for after-work sessions in the deep-winter dark. The club also runs lessons and events; check the Wapiti Nordic Ski Club's site for trail fees, grooming reports and rentals availability.
New to it?
Cross-country is the friendliest winter sport to start: low cost, low risk, huge reward. Dress lighter than you think — you'll be warm in ten minutes — and bring a buff for the downhills.
Base camp
We're an easy drive north: morning ski, lunch in the city, then the hot tub earns its keep on tired legs. Add the 5:30 breakfast and you can be first tracks on fresh grooming.
Staying in Grande Prairie? Enjoy free hot breakfast from 5:30 AM, an indoor pool with waterslide, free Wi-Fi and free parking at Holiday Inn Express Grande Prairie. Book direct through IHG or call 1-780-814-9446.
