The 455-kilometre run up Highway 43 doesn't have to be a slog. Break it right and it's a proper northern road trip.

The classic stops

Whitecourt (~1.5 hrs) is the fuel-and-coffee standard, with riverside parks for leg stretches. Fox Creek (~2.5 hrs) is the practical mid-point top-up. Valleyview (~3.5 hrs), the 'Portal to the Peace,' makes the best meal stop before the final push — and from there the landscape opens into big Peace Country sky.

Timing the drive

Summer daylight makes evening drives easy; in winter, aim to arrive before dark and check 511 Alberta for the whole corridor. Wildlife is real at dusk — moose don't check mirrors.

Arrival done right

We sit on Grande Prairie's north side right off the highway grid: free parking, hot tub, walkable dinner, and a 5:30 AM breakfast if you're pushing on to BC. Full directions on our Getting Here page.
