When to look
September through April offers dark enough skies, with the deep-winter months best. Check an aurora forecast app for the Kp index; anything Kp 3+ is promising this far north. Clear, moonless, cold nights are ideal.
Where to go
You only need to escape the city glow: ten to fifteen minutes north or west on the highway grid opens up huge horizons. Pull well off the road, kill the headlights and let your eyes adjust for ten minutes. In strong displays you'll see green curtains overhead, not just on the northern horizon.
